Passage Planning Guidelines

Timing: Always add margin for weather delays. Coastal passages typically need 10-20% margin; offshore passages 20-30% or more depending on season and route.

Fuel: Minimum 20% fuel reserve is essential. For offshore passages, consider 30-50% reserve for unexpected motoring due to calms or schedule pressure.

Water: Plan 1 gallon (4 liters) per person per day minimum. In tropical conditions, plan 1.5-2 gallons. Watermaker-equipped boats should carry backup supply.

Provisions: Plan for passage time plus 50% margin. Include easy-to-prepare meals for heavy weather days. Don't forget seasickness remedies and comfort foods.
