Marine Fuel Tank Guidelines (ABYC H-33)
Material Requirements
Diesel: Aluminum (5052, 5083, 5086), steel, fiberglass, or cross-linked polyethylene.
Gasoline: Aluminum, steel, or fiberglass only. Poly tanks not permitted for gasoline on boats.
Minimum wall thickness: 0.090" for aluminum, 0.0747" (14 ga) for steel.
Installation Notes
Fuel tanks should be secured to prevent movement in all directions.
5% expansion space required - never fill completely.
All tanks must be grounded and equipped with proper venting per USCG regulations.
